Kirn, a small town on the Nahe River in the Rhineland, issued notgeld coinage in 1919 as Germany's postwar zinc and copper shortages made Reichsmünze production wholly inadequate for local commerce. Municipal issues like this one filled the gap at the street level — tram fares, market stalls, small change that the central mints simply couldn't supply. The Funck 245.2 variety distinction within this series suggests at least two die states or edge variants were produced, a common complication in notgeld zinc issues where local contractors lacked the consistency of federal minting facilities.
