| Beschrijving keerzijde | Outer pearl border frames the reverse, with the legend KLEINGELD ERSATZ (meaning small change substitute) arcing across the upper field, flanked by small rosette stops in the lower field. An inner raised pearl circle encloses the central device, which displays the municipal coat of arms of Kehl: a shield bearing an anchor beneath a pair of floral sprigs, three small rosette ornaments arranged in the lower exergual area below the inner circle. |

Kehl sits directly across the Rhine from Strasbourg, and its wartime notgeld issues reflect that border tension acutely. Following the armistice in 1918, French forces occupied the bridgehead at Kehl under the Treaty of Versailles, administering the town separately from the rest of Baden until 1930 — one of the longest occupation periods of any German municipality. Small-denomination zinc issues like this one emerged from chronic coin shortages that occupation-era economic disruption made worse, with the Reichsbank unable to reliably supply the occupied zone through normal channels.
