Hohenwestedt is a small market town in Schleswig-Holstein, and this iron notgeld piece was almost certainly issued during the acute small-change shortage of World War I, when the German imperial government's requisitioning of copper and nickel for munitions production stripped the civilian economy of nearly all its coinage. Local credit associations — Creditvereine — stepped into that vacuum across hundreds of German municipalities, issuing iron and zinc substitutes that rarely travelled far beyond the issuing community.
