F.W.L. Poetsch G.M.B.H. was a Hamburg-based industrial firm that issued its own notgeld token coinage during the acute small-change shortages that plagued Germany following World War I. Municipal and state mints were overwhelmed, and private companies — particularly larger employers — began issuing zinc and iron tokens to pay workers in denominations that could actually be used in canteens and company stores. Zinc was the material of necessity, not choice; copper and nickel had been consumed by the war effort years earlier.
