A. Riebecksche Montanwerke was one of the dominant brown coal (lignite) extraction and processing firms in the Halle-Merseburg industrial belt, and like many large German industrial enterprises of the early twentieth century, it issued its own token coinage for use in company facilities — canteens, company stores, and internal settlements. Iron was the practical wartime or postwar substitute of necessity, used when copper and zinc were diverted to the war effort or were otherwise restricted under occupation and economic controls.
