Hagenau — today Haguenau in Alsace — was under German administration when local merchants and firms issued notgeld to address the coin shortages that plagued the civilian economy during the First World War. J. Kleemann was among dozens of Alsatian traders who printed or struck their own emergency pieces, circulating them as store credit redeemable within their own premises.
