A piece of German Notgeld, issued by a private individual — Hugo Heimann — rather than a municipality or savings bank. Private-issuer Notgeld of this scale appeared across Germany and Austria during the acute small-change shortages of 1917–1921, when hoarding of metal coinage left everyday transactions nearly impossible. Heimann's notes would have circulated purely as local scrip, accepted only within whatever commercial radius his name carried.
Gr.-Graben is an abbreviation for Groß-Graben. The issuer's identity beyond the name is unrecorded in standard Notgeld catalogs.
