Gößnitz issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1918 as the German war economy stripped conventional coinage metals from circulation entirely — copper and nickel had been redirected to munitions production years earlier, leaving municipal councils across Saxe-Altenburg and the broader German states scrambling for emergency substitutes. Zinc was among the least desirable options, prone to oxidation and notoriously difficult to strike cleanly, which explains the frequently poor surface quality seen on surviving examples of this type.
