F. & R. Fischer was a Göppingen metalware manufacturer that, like hundreds of German industrial firms, issued its own emergency coinage — Notgeld — during the acute small-change shortages of 1917–1918, when wartime metal requisitions had stripped the Reich's circulating coinage down to near nothing. Zinc was the material of necessity: copper and nickel had been redirected to the war effort years earlier. These private municipal tokens filled gaps in daily commercial transactions at a hyper-local level, redeemable only within the issuing firm's own network.
