10 Pfennig Gibana

Gibana was a philatelic and picture postcard exhibition held in Giessen in 1921, and this 10 Pfennig note is one of the more self-referential pieces of German notgeld — issued by an exhibition whose subject matter was itself collectible ephemera. The organizers understood their audience entirely. These were produced as souvenirs for attendees, not as emergency small change, which puts them firmly in the "Serienscheine" category of notgeld issued primarily for collector sale rather than genuine monetary need.

By 1921, that practice was widespread enough to draw criticism from the Reichsbank, which moved to suppress collector notgeld issues later that year.
