Germersheim's 1917 iron notgeld issue belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency coinage forced on German cities when the imperial government requisitioned copper and nickel for war production. The Bavarian Rhine city, better known for its 19th-century federal fortress, was among hundreds of municipalities left to solve the small-change shortage independently. Iron was the default fallback — abundant, cheap, and strategically undesirable enough that the military left it alone.
