10 Pfennig - Gardelegen

Gardelegen issued notgeld coinage in iron during the post-WWI material shortages, when copper and nickel had been exhausted by wartime requisitioning and the central government could no longer supply municipalities with adequate small change. These local iron pieces were authorized stopgaps — struck by town authorities to keep commerce moving at the street level when Reichs coinage had effectively vanished from circulation.

The Funck reference places this among a documented series, but municipal iron notgeld survives unevenly; Gardelegen pieces see less collector traffic than issues from larger Prussian towns, keeping attributions dependent on the Funck and Menzel catalogs almost entirely.
