Gardelegen issued this notgeld piece during the acute small-change shortage that followed Germany's postwar economic dislocation — a crisis so severe that hundreds of municipalities across Germany struck their own emergency coinage in 1921 simply to keep local commerce moving. Iron was the pragmatic choice: copper and nickel were still being rationed or hoarded, and iron could be sourced and struck cheaply by regional manufacturers contracted by the city.
The Funck 150.1 designation places this among the catalogued iron issues rather than the more collectible zinc or aluminum variants some neighboring towns used.
