Canteen tokens issued by German field artillery regiments during the First World War filled a practical gap when small-denomination coinage disappeared from circulation after 1914 — hoarded by civilians and melted for war production alike. The 6th Field Artillery Regiment's canteen administration issued these zinc pieces for internal use, redeemable only within regimental facilities, which kept scrip from leaking into the broader economy.
Zinc was the material of necessity by this point, copper and nickel having been redirected to munitions.
