An inner twisted rope circle encloses the central field, where the large numeral 10 is prominently raised. Frauenau's glassworks, deep in the Bavarian Forest, issued emergency coinage — Notgeld — during the acute small-change shortages that gripped Germany after World War I. Factory-issued tokens like this one were a practical stopgap: the company paid workers partly in scrip redeemable at the company store, sidestepping the near-total collapse of low-denomination state coinage in circulation. Brass-plated zinc was the material of necessity, not preference.
