R.W. Dinnendahl was an Essen-based machinery and engineering firm whose wartime production demands — like those of most heavy industrial concerns in the Ruhr — created an acute shortage of small change as workers flooded the factories and banks hoarded metal coinage. This zinc notgeld token was issued as in-house scrip, redeemable at the company's own facilities, a practice the German imperial government reluctantly tolerated from 1916 onward as municipal and corporate emergency money filled the vacuum left by disappearing bronze and copper coins requisitioned for the war effort.
