Issued by the Vereinigte Harzer Portlandcement- und Kalkindustrie works at Elbingerode, this iron token belongs to the vast wave of privately issued Notgeld that flooded German industrial regions during and immediately after World War I, when copper and nickel disappeared from civilian use. Factory-issued coinage of this type was a practical solution to chronic small-change shortages, accepted within company stores and wage systems but worthless beyond the plant gates.
