Ehingen an der Donau issued this notgeld piece in 1918 as the German imperial economy buckled under wartime metal requisitions. Copper and nickel had long been stripped from circulation for munitions production, forcing hundreds of municipalities to print or strike their own emergency currency. Zinc was among the few metals still available for small-denomination coinage, though it corrodes readily — survivors in clean condition are consistently harder to find than the mintage figures suggest.
