Issued by the acetone factory at Burghausen on the Salzach — one of Bavaria's major chemical production sites — this zinc token belongs to the Notgeld wave of WWI and its immediate aftermath, when private industrial employers routinely struck their own subsidiary coinage to pay workers when official small change had effectively vanished from circulation. The Bayerische Stickstoffwerke complex at Burghausen was already expanding rapidly during this period, and factory-issued tokens kept the local wage economy functional when the Reichsbank could not.
