Burghaslach is a small Franconian market village, and Chr. Hümmer's grocery (Kolonialwarengeschäft) almost certainly issued this zinc token during the acute small-change shortage that plagued Germany in the early 1920s, when the Reichsbank's coin production collapsed under inflationary pressure. Local merchants across Bavaria and Franconia filled the vacuum with privately struck notgeld tokens, redeemable only at the issuing shop — a practical fix that also functioned as captive credit. Zinc was the material of necessity; aluminum and iron had their own supply constraints.
