Westfälisch-Anhaltische Sprengstoff AG — commonly known as WASAG — was one of Germany's principal explosives manufacturers, producing munitions throughout both World Wars. Emergency token coinage of this type was issued to pay workers at industrial plants during the chronic small-change shortages of the First World War and early Weimar period, circulating exclusively within company canteens and commissaries. Zinc was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had been requisitioned for the war effort well before 1916.
