Wertheim was Berlin's dominant department store empire in the Wilhelmine and Weimar periods, and like many large German retailers of the era, it issued private token coinage for internal use — canteen purchases, employee credit, or in-store accounting purposes. These zinc pieces circulated strictly within the firm's own ecosystem, never entering the broader monetary supply. The store's flagship Leipziger Strasse location was largely destroyed in 1943.
