Backnang issued this notgeld piece in the closing months of World War I, when the Imperial German coinage system had essentially collapsed under the weight of wartime metal requisitioning. Iron replaced copper, nickel, and zinc in municipal emergency issues across Württemberg as the Reich stripped base metals for shell casings and military hardware.
