Ahrweiler's wartime notgeld coinage was issued out of necessity after the outbreak of WWI drained small-denomination metal coinage from everyday commerce across Germany. Iron was the fallback material — copper and nickel had military priority. The N. Mies attribution identifies the local merchant or municipal contractor who underwrote or distributed this particular issue, a common arrangement in Rhenish towns where municipal credit was backstopped by named commercial guarantors.
