Adelsheim issued this zinc notgeld as part of the emergency coinage wave that swept German municipalities when wartime metal requisitions stripped federal coin production of copper and nickel. Zinc was the fallback — cheap, available, and deeply unpopular with the public, who found it corroded quickly and stuck together in damp conditions. Most pieces saw brief, grudging use before being hoarded or discarded.
The Funck double-reference here suggests at least two recognized die varieties within the type, a common finding among municipal issues where local contracts went to small regional die-cutters with inconsistent tooling.
