| Obverse description | Central field displays the heraldic eagle of Aalen, rendered as a spread-winged imperial-style eagle with a crowned shield on its breast bearing the city's arms. The legend STADTGEMEINDE arcs across the upper periphery in bold raised lettering, while AALEN appears along the lower periphery. The date is divided on either side of the eagle, with 19 to the left and 17 to the right. The entire design is framed by a finely toothed inner border running along the rim. |

Aalen's 1917 iron notgeld issue belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency coinage authorized after the German imperial government began withdrawing copper and nickel from circulation for war material. Württemberg municipalities like Aalen were left to fill the small-denomination gap themselves. Iron was the acceptable substitute — cheap, abundant, and already deeply associated with the German war economy through the "Iron for Gold" propaganda campaigns of the preceding years.
