Obverse description The heraldic bear of Aachen, the traditional symbol of the city, is depicted seated and facing forward in the center of the field, rendered in bold relief. The city name STADT is inscribed to the left and AACHEN to the right of the bear, arching around the upper portion of the coin. The date 1920 appears in the lower exergue below the bear's base. The overall design is characteristic of the German Notgeld emergency coinage aesthetic of the early Weimar Republic period.
