Laupheim's 1917 Kleingeldscheine were issued out of necessity, not ambition — the wartime metal shortage had pulled pfennig coinage from circulation across Germany, and hundreds of municipalities were forced to fill the gap themselves. Stähle & Friedel in Stuttgart handled enormous volumes of this small-denomination municipal paper, serving towns throughout Württemberg during the crisis years.
The "b" suffix in the Grabowski reference denotes a color variant, distinguishing this orange paper from an earlier or concurrent printing on a different stock.
