Obverse description Cream-toned note with a fine guilloche underprint and a scalloped ornamental border. The municipal coat of arms of Weida — a red heraldic vignette with elaborate baroque scrollwork and a crest of foliage above a walled gateway flanked by two towers — is centred on the face. The denomination '10 PF.' appears in bold black letterpress on both sides of the arms, with the arc legend 'NOTGELD DER STADT WEIDA (TH.)' at the top, two manuscript signatures below under the rubrics 'DER GEMEINDEVORSTAND' and 'DER GEMEINDERAT', and a three-line redemption clause in italic type at the foot, above the printer's imprint.

Comments

Weida is a small town in eastern Thuringia, and this 10 Pfennig Notgeld piece is one of four related issues cataloged under the same Grabowski-Mehl reference block. Like the vast majority of municipal Kleingeldscheine issued between 1917 and 1921, it was produced in direct response to the wartime and postwar hoarding of metal coinage — small change effectively vanished from circulation, forcing even minor municipalities to print their own substitutes.

E. Günther of Gera handled a substantial volume of Thuringian Notgeld work during this period, serving numerous neighboring towns as the regional printer of choice.
