Plauen im Vogtland was one of hundreds of German municipalities forced into emergency small-change production during the First World War, when hoarding stripped copper and nickel coins from circulation almost immediately after August 1914. This particular Stadtgemeinde issue is a Kleingeldschein — a fractional note meant to plug the gap left by vanished Pfennig coinage, not a Kriegsgeld in the broader sense.
The DeNG reference suffix variants (d-e) indicate paper or print differences within the same basic issue, a common complication in Vogtland notgeld collecting where municipal print runs were often split across local job printers with inconsistent stock.
