Teterow is a small market town in Mecklenburg, and like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities, it issued its own emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that followed the outbreak of war in 1914. The Stadt Teterow notes fall within the first wave of municipal issues, driven by the hoarding of metal coinage rather than any local financial crisis. The watermarked paper was a deliberate attempt to discourage counterfeiting at a scale that seems almost absurd given the denomination involved.
