Röbel is a small market town on the Müritz in Mecklenburg, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1922, it issued its own emergency paper — Notgeld — to fill the void left by a catastrophic shortage of small-denomination coins. Hyperinflation was already destroying the Reichsmark's purchasing power, but this note belongs to the earlier "series" Notgeld phase, when towns issued collectible small notes partly as a revenue scheme; local authorities discovered that philatelists and collectors would buy and hold sets without ever redeeming them.
The 76 × 55 mm format is characteristic of the smaller municipal issues produced on commercial job presses throughout northern Germany during this period.
