Lyck — known today as Ełk in northeastern Poland — was a Masurian town whose wartime notgeld issues emerged from the near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage circulation after 1914. The hoarding of metal coins throughout Germany forced thousands of municipalities to print their own emergency paper, and Lyck was among the smaller East Prussian communities to do so. These issues were authorized locally and redeemed locally; most never traveled far.
