Strelitz — the older of the two towns that merged in 1919 to form Neustrelitz — issued emergency paper money (Notgeld) during the acute coin shortage that plagued Germany from roughly 1916 onward. Municipal and commercial issuers across the country printed low-denomination notes to fill the gap left by hoarded and melted coinage, and Stadt Strelitz was one of thousands of local authorities that did so.
Nothing in the surviving record distinguishes this particular piece from the broader wave of small-town Kleingeldscheine. Worth acquiring as a Mecklenburg-Strelitz regional example rather than as a rarity.
