Rauenstein is a small village in the Sonneberg district of Thuringia, and like hundreds of similarly sized German communities in 1920, it issued Notgeld not primarily out of financial necessity but because the collector trade had made it profitable. The small municipalities got revenue; collectors got colorful local ephemera. Hermann Müller's signature here identifies the issuing official rather than any banking authority — Gemeinde-level Notgeld carried no central bank backing whatsoever.
Sonneberg district pieces from this period were printed in large runs relative to local population, and many were never spent.
