Brehna was a small Prussian town in Saxony-Anhalt, and like hundreds of similar municipalities in 1921, it resorted to printing its own Kleingeldersatz when the chronic small-coin shortage — itself a product of wartime metal requisitioning and postwar inflationary pressure — made everyday commerce genuinely difficult. These local Notgeld issues were authorized under emergency provisions but varied enormously in quality and quantity; the involvement of H. Schiebel, a Bitterfeld printer, kept this series within conventional commercial production rather than the hand-stamped or typewritten improvisation seen in smaller issuances.

The DeNG reference numbers suggest at least three distinct variants within this denomination.
