Gebesee is a small town in Thuringia, and this note is a product of the Notgeld wave that flooded Germany between 1919 and 1922 — municipalities printing their own small-denomination emergency currency because the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough low-value coin. Kirchner's Erfurt shop handled a substantial volume of Thuringian Notgeld commissions during this period, printing for dozens of small issuers across the region.
The Magistrat series from Gebesee attracts modest collector interest primarily as a complete set rather than individually. This denomination is the most commonly surviving piece from the issue.
