Derenburg is a small market town in the Harz foothills, and this 10 Pfennig note is a product of the Kleingeldersatz crisis of 1920–1921, when coin metal shortages left municipalities across Germany unable to provide adequate small change. Hundreds of towns issued their own emergency paper in these denominations — Louis Koch in Halberstadt was one of the regional printers who handled considerable volume of this work, supplying multiple Harz-area communities.
The DeNG reference places this within a numbered series for Derenburg, indicating at least three variants were issued.
