Bürgel is a small Thuringian town long associated with its distinctive brown-glazed pottery, and the local Notgeld series reflects exactly that kind of municipal self-promotion — these emergency issues were as much collectible souvenirs as functional small change during the coin shortages of the early Weimar years. By 1921, German towns had discovered that well-designed Notgeld sold to collectors nationwide, generating revenue beyond face value.
Alfred Eisenach printed this in-house, with design credited to Max Eisenach of Barmen — the shared surname suggests a family connection, though the Barmen attribution places the designer in what is now Wuppertal, far from Bürgel.
