Comments

Bad Kösen, a spa town in Saxony-Anhalt, issued this Notgeld during the hyperinflationary spiral of the early Weimar Republic, when coin shortages left municipalities scrambling to produce their own small-denomination emergency currency. Thousands of German towns did the same in 1921, but the sheer volume of production — and the secondary collectors' market that rapidly developed — means many of these pieces circulated more among hobbyists than in actual trade. Bad Kösen was well aware of this; collector-targeted Notgeld was a recognized revenue stream for cash-strapped communities by this point in the crisis.
