| Obverse description | Green-tinted notgeld printed on light paper with a decorative border of oak leaves on the vertical sides and a foliate frieze along the lower edge. At centre top, a circular vignette displays the Saarburg town gate surmounted by the municipal arms, flanked by grapevine branches with clusters extending across the upper portion of the note. The denomination '10 PFENNIG' is set in large bold letterpress type at centre, below which a three-line validity clause in German script is followed at lower left by the place and date 'Luftkurort-Saarburg, den 1. Juli 1920' and at lower right by the printed facsimile signature of the Bürgermeister, Dr. Treitz. Denomination numerals '10' appear in each corner within circular cartouches. |

Saarburg's 1920 notgeld was issued during the Allied occupation of the Rhineland, when the post-war coin shortage made even the smallest denominations functionally useless for everyday commerce. Municipal authorities across the Rhine Province filled the gap with locally authorized paper, and Saarburg contracted Schaar & Dathe in nearby Trier — a printer responsible for a significant share of the region's small-denomination emergency issues that year.
The signatory, Dr. Treitz, signed as Bürgermeister in Vertretung — acting mayor — suggesting the substantive officeholder was either absent or the post was temporarily vacant during the occupation period.
