Jacobshagen — now Dobrzany in northwestern Poland — was one of hundreds of small German municipalities that issued Kleingeldersatz notes in 1920 when postwar coin shortages made small-denomination currency nearly impossible to find in ordinary commerce. These civic emergency issues were authorized under loosely applied wartime and transitional regulations, and the quality of paper, printing, and design varied wildly from town to town depending entirely on whatever local printer happened to be available.
Jacobshagen's population at the time was under three thousand. Notes of this type rarely traveled far from the issuing town.
