In Gothic (Fraktur) script, 'Stadt' appears at upper left and 'Melle' at upper right, flanking the central text panel which reads 'Gutschein über zehn Pfennig' above the date 'Melle, 24. Februar 1920.' and the issuing authority 'Der Magistrat'. Bold numeral '10' denominators appear at lower left and right, with two manuscript signatures below the authority line. |

Melle's 1920 Notgeld issue is entirely local in character — printed by F. E. Haag, a commercial printer based in the same town, for a municipality then in the administrative district of Osnabrück. This was common practice during the Kleingeldnotgeld wave of 1919–1921, when the postwar coin shortage pushed hundreds of German towns to commission their own small-denomination emergency notes from whatever press happened to be nearby.
F. E. Haag was not a specialist banknote printer, which is exactly what the finished product reflects.
