Prien am Chiemsee issued this note under the wave of municipal emergency currency — Notgeld — that swept German towns after the First World War, when small-denomination coinage essentially vanished from circulation. The Gemeinderat's authority to issue such scrip was informal at best; Berlin tolerated it out of necessity rather than legal sanction. Gebr. Gerck of Munich was a workhorse printer for Bavarian municipal Notgeld, turning out issues for dozens of small communities during this period.
The three catalogue variants (1074.1–3) suggest colour or text differences between print runs — minor in isolation, but meaningful to specialists working the DeNG series.
