Trier's 1920 Pfennig notgeld was a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that hit Rhineland municipalities particularly hard — French occupation forces under the Rhineland Commission controlled the region from 1919, and the disruption to normal Reichsbank currency distribution left smaller denominations almost entirely absent from daily commerce. Local authorities across the occupied zone resorted to their own emergency paper, printed by whatever press was available.
Schaar & Dathe, a local Trier firm, handled this issue — one of the few notgeld series printed and payable within the same occupied city by the same administration.
