Forst (Lausitz) was a prosperous textile manufacturing town in Brandenburg, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency paper currency — Notgeld — to compensate for a chronic shortage of small-denomination Reichsmark coinage. The national mint simply could not keep pace with post-war demand. Municipal and corporate issuers filled the gap themselves.
Forst's issues from this period are generally considered series Notgeld rather than pure necessity pieces — printed in sufficient quantities and with enough deliberate design to suggest the local authority was aware collectors were already driving a secondary market for such material.
