Marienburg — now Malbork, Poland — issued this notgeld in 1919 while the city's political future was genuinely unresolved. The Treaty of Versailles placed the surrounding region of West Prussia under the new Polish state, but Marienburg itself was awarded to Germany following the 1920 plebiscite, largely because of its German-speaking population and its symbolic weight as the seat of the Teutonic Knights' Grand Masters. Municipal authorities across the region were printing emergency pfennig notes throughout this period partly because Reichsbank coin had effectively vanished from small-denomination circulation, hoarded or melted during the war years.
The Magistrat series from Marienburg is relatively common in surviving quantities, suggesting it circulated heavily rather than being saved as a curiosity.
