Saarbrücken issued this Notgeld in 1919 under the peculiar administrative limbo that followed the Armistice — the Saar region had not yet been formally detached under the League of Nations mandate, which only took effect in 1920, so municipal authorities were still issuing emergency currency in their own name rather than waiting for an occupying framework to settle the question. Small-denomination Notgeld from this transitional window is frequently overlooked by collectors focused on the more flamboyant 1921–22 issues.
The DeNG reference places this firmly in the early Saarbrücken municipal series, before the Saar's separate currency arrangements came into force.
