Recklinghausen's 1919 notgeld issue belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded the Ruhr following the armistice. The Reichsbank's coin hoarding problem — silver and copper had been systematically pulled from circulation since 1915 — left industrial towns like Recklinghausen functionally unable to make change, forcing the city administration to print its own solution.
