Recklinghausen's 1919 notgeld issue belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded the Ruhr following the armistice. The Reichsbank's coin hoarding problem — silver and copper had been systematically pulled from circulation since 1915 — left industrial towns like Recklinghausen functionally unable to make change, forcing the city administration to print its own solution. Tens of thousands of similar municipal pieces appeared across Germany in this period, which makes condition and series completeness the only real differentiators for collectors working this material.
